There are three major ways for dealing with depression naturally.
First, I can resolve the underlying problem.
If I am depressed because I don’t have work, I need to start working.
Second, I can make changes to my diet, exercise, and mental practices such as meditation or mindfulness.
if I am depressed because I don’t have enough energy, I can try making changes to my diet and exercise.
And the third method is working directly on the negative emotion that I feel.
I discuss this method in this video.
My suggestion is to replace this negative emotion with a positive one.
When I feel depressed, I remind myself of a moment when I felt elated.
I make sure to replay it in my mind in as much detail as possible.
The more senses I can engage, the better.
Because our mind can focus on one thing at a time, this positive emotion replaces the negative one.
And I feel great instantly.
Then I maintain this positive emotion as long as possible by reminding myself of it whenever my depression tries to creep back in.
When the effect wears off, I can replay the moment all over again to reinforce the effect.
I found that as I practiced shifting my focus from negative to positive emotions, I got better at this.
I programmed my mind to replace those depressive thoughts with positive ones and it happens almost automatically now.
